| SIA’s 20th Birthday Celebrated
On the afternoon of March 24, 2007, Shanghai Interpreters' Association (SIA) held a grand meeting to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of its founding at the auditorium of Shanghai Library. Over 500 SIA members, old and young, attended the meeting with great enthusiasm.

at the rostrum. Guests of honor who specially came from Beijing to Shanghai to attend the meeting were Tang Wensheng, Executive Vice President of Translation Association of China (TAC), Huang Youyi, Deputy Director-General of China Foreign Languages Publishing & Distribution Administration and Vice President and Secretary General of TAC, Chen Mingming, Director-General of Department of Translation and Interpretation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Secretary General of TAC, Jiang Yonggang, Executive Deputy Secretary General of TAC and Gu Jiading, Senior Translator of China's Foreign Ministry and Honorary President of SIA. Yang Guoqiang, Director General of Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office and President of SIA, Jian Heping, Vice Chairperson of Shanghai Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission, Shan Jie, Deputy Director General of Shanghai Administration of Social Organizations, Xi Shizeng, Deputy Director General of Shanghai Entry and Exit Administration Bureau as well as other SIA's leaders also attended the celebration meeting.

Congratulatory letters from Shanghai foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission and Shanghai Tourism Administration and letters from TAC and translation associations of other provinces and municipalities were read out and were warmly applauded by SIA members.
President Yang Guoqiang delivered a SIA work report in which he reviewed the course traversed by SIA and the major work it has done over the past 20 years. He also summer up the experience and pointed out the task ahead.
TAC's Executive Vice President Tang Wensheng addressed the meeting on behalf of TAC. She extended
her warm congratulations to SIA members on the occasion of SIA's 20 th anniversary. She spoke highly of SIA's work. She stressed that translation has played an ever increasingly important role in the social development and served as a bridge of cultural exchange between China and other countries. Tang also dwelled on the World Congress of Translators to be held in 2008 in Shanghai and called on translators to make the congress a great success.
A letter from Fan Xiping, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Municipal Government, was read out at the meeting. Fan commented that the SIA had played an important role in uniting and organizing interpreters and translators in the field of foreign affairs to participate in Shanghai's major international exchanges and in Shanghai's opening up and social development since it was founded 20 years ago.
At the celebration meeting, 21 senior translators were commended and received awards. 58 activists were also commended for their contributions to SIA's development and they received “Contribution Awards”.
